Wheel Bearings 101: How to Know When It’s Time for a Replacement

While they perform their duty and support the weight of the car, wheel bearings do fail after several years of quiet service. They are located in the hub of the wheel, and as they start to wear down, you’ll feel it in the entire vehicle.

The most common indicator that a bearing is failing is noise. Drivers describe it as a low hum or growl that changes pitch depending on speed, and is usually louder the faster you go. This type of noise can be easily mistaken for road or tyre noise, however, it is important to note that a genuine bearing problem tends to worsen with time, as opposed to road and tyre noise that stays constant.

Another sign to look out for is an alteration in handling of the vehicle. Bearings that have become worn may introduce a small amount of play into the wheel. This can present itself as a vibration felt through the steering wheel or can create a feeling of decreased stability when the car is being driven in a corner. If the steering does seem to feel looser than normal, it would be a good idea to have the bearings checked in addition to having the rest of the suspension reviewed.

You might see uneven tyre wear coming faster than anticipated. A worn-out bearing allows tiny bits of wobble in the wheel, meaning tyre wear can even happen when all other aspects of your driving remain constant.

Jack the car up and check for play by rocking the wheel top to bottom. If there’s any noticeable movement, and you hear a noise while driving, that’s usually a good sign that the bearing is dead.

When a bearing starts to fail, this is more than just a comfort issue; it can become a safety issue as well. In the most severe case, a bearing may seize or fail altogether. This could lead to losing control of the wheel. The bright side is that most garages can replace the bearing because it is a relatively simple job. Additionally, when the job is done early, it will be much cheaper than the damages that a complete failure will cause.

If your car is making strange noises, it’s time to investigate. Ignoring the sound could lead to higher repair costs.
